DotNetNuke v6 increases productivity

by: Phil Biggs, 04/10/2011

July 2011 saw the release of DNN v6. The new version offers a dramatically simpler interface for developers, designers and content owners that significantly accelerates Web site design, delivery and updates. The new release offers built-in integration with cloud-based services such as Amazon Web Services and Windows Azure, making this the most “cloud-ready” version of DotNetNuke ever.

The enterprise release (EE) of the new version also empowers customers for the first time to cost-effectively and securely publish files managed in Microsoft Office SharePoint to external Web sites, seamlessly integrating the best in class enterprise content management capabilities of SharePoint with the market leading WCM capabilities of the DotNetNuke.

Simplified Customer Interface Speeds Design, Development, Content Updates

The simplified DotNetNuke 6 user interface dramatically increases productivity by making it much easier to build and maintain Web sites. A new, more complete site template makes it easy to launch a site in minutes. Context relevant windows, pop-up dialogs, an updated administration module and a highly modern platform for building and operating websites. A new page administration interface delivers an enhanced user experience plus new capabilities that make page management and creation within DotNetNuke easier than ever before.

Integration with Cloud Services Provides Seamless Storage Options

DotNetNuke 6 is compatible with Windows Azure Cloud Hosting (Platform as a Service) and also provides two folder provider options (Amazon S3 and Windows Azure File Storage) that can be used to store files in the cloud (Storage as a Service). Available in both the Professional and Enterprise Editions, the DotNetNuke 6 folder options are now integrated through an open API that can integrate Windows Azure Storage, Amazon S3, or other services and make them operate as if they were local folders.

eCommerce Module Gets Business Running Faster

A new eCommerce module, available with the Professional and Enterprise Editions of DotNetNuke 6, empowers organizations with a small portfolio of digital goods and services to quickly set up eCommerce capabilities. Designed with simplicity and customer experience in mind, the new module supports PayPal and Authorize.Net payment options, along with robust order management, flexible product display and checkout options, product management, discount management and dashboard capabilities.

Phil Biggs, Technical Director, Chord9

"Our experience thus far with v6 underlines that this release is a big step forward in the usability of the system, bringing a modern and up-to-date feel to the end user experience. The increased control over user administration functions and editing capabilities is particularly welcome facility for sites with multiple content editors. Our first sites built on v6 will be going live shortly and no doubt we’ll soon be scheduling client site upgrades from the v5 platform."
